5 DIY Homemade Shaving Cream Recipes (For Men And Women)

First off, we can definitely agree that there is a certain amount of pleasure in using things you made yourself. You know, you feel pride and joy knowing that, well, you were capable of making it – and it actually works. So, for you enthusiasts out there who want to stop using products that don’t feel good, don’t smell right or just cost too much, we have prepared a recipe for two homemade shaving creams you’re going to love.

You’ll probably notice that most of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen cabinet – even if you don’t use them, we’d recommend checking with your wife/girlfriend/mother before going to the store – they seem to have some secret places where all the ingredients anyone could ever need are placed… you just need to know where to look.

You may have also noticed that they contain no chemicals whatsoever – we’ll give you completely natural “products” and all you have to think of is getting the amounts right and making enough of ‘em. Your face will feel like it never did before and you’ll always be able to say: “If I told the secret ingredient you, I’d have to kill you.”

DIY Shaving Cream Recipe #1

The title pretty much says it all. For this shaving cream, all you need is a couple of ingredients:

  • ⅔cup coconut oil
  • ⅔cup Shea nut oil or Shea butter
  • ¼ cup olive oil or grape seed oil
  • 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oils/oil blend
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Contents of 2 vitamin E capsules (optional)

When it comes to what you are going to make this in, we recommend a double boiler for the best effect. It’s easy to make even if you don’t own one: you just need a medium pot and a smaller glass bowl. Fill the pot with a few inches of water and place the bowl on top of it. Make sure that the top of the bowl isn’t touching the water – if that’s the case, pour some of it out. When the water starts simmering, it will gently melt the ingredients that are in the top bowl.

Recipe Instructions:

Making homemade shaving cream step 1

  1. Put the coconut oil and Shea nut oil/Shea butter together in a bowl and melt them until the blend is homogeneous. Tip: before adding it, break the Shea butter up into smaller pieces to help it melt faster.

  2. When that’s done, turn off the heat and then add ¼ cup olive oil or grapeseed oil and stir it in.

  3. The next part is adding 10-20 drops of essential oils, depending on how strong you want it to smell. Make sure you really like the smell because you’ll be using it for some time.

  4. Give it a good stir and then put it in the fridge to harden. It doesn’t have to be hard, just no longer liquidy.
  5. When you take the blend out of the fridge, add the contents of those two vitamin E capsules and two tablespoons of baking soda you had prepared. The next thing you do is take a mixer and whip it for around 3 minutes.
  6. You’re done. That’s it. Piece of cake, right? Now all you have to do is transfer your shaving cream to an airtight jar and put it in your bathroom cabinet – you’re ready for the best shaving experience ever.

DIY Shaving Cream Recipe (with honey) #2

A woman shaving beard

She can use it too!

If you’re looking for a homemade shaving cream that both you and your girlfriend/wife can use, check out this one. It’s natural, cheap and so easy to make – and you are both going to love the feel after using it. To make it, all you need are these ingredients:

  • ½ cup oil (olive, grape seed, almond etc.)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup liquid, castile soap
  • 10 drops of essential oils (optional)

Recipe Instructions:

  1. When we said it’s really simple, we actually meant it. All you have to do is combine ingredients in a bowl and rapidly whisk for several minutes.
  2. When you see that they have fully emulsified, the only thing left to do is transfer it to a pump or a squeeze bottle. And get this – you only need a pea-sized amount per shave, and it doesn’t expire!

DIY Shaving Cream Recipe #3

A man shaving beard

A great backup plan for you.

This one is always good as a backup plan, if nothing else. You probably have the ingredients in your kitchen cabinet, it’s real simple to make and you’ll use it for forever. No need to say it’s going to make your skin feel great (did you ever think this could happen with a cream you made yourself?). So, here’s what you’ll need…

  • 1 oz homemade soap (non-castile is better for this one – will make it thicker)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
  • 10 drops essential oils of your choice

Recipe Instructions:

  1. Take a saucepan, pour a cup of water inside and shave 1 oz of soap into it. Put it on low heat and wait till it melts into a nice blend.
  2. Once that’s done, remove it from the stove and add the fractionated coconut oil and the essential oils you like. The same rule applies when it comes to the amount – the more you add, the stronger the fragrance.
  3. Now just put it into a foam pump and it’s ready for use. Easy, right?

DIY Shampoo/Conditioner Shaving Cream Recipe

Man shaving beard

Just make sure the ingredients of the shampoo/conditioner are organic.

The only recommendation we have for this one is to make sure you use a shampoo or conditioner that has natural, organic ingredients. Using lots of chemicals on your face is always a bad idea if you ask us. Maybe you should even try to make a homemade shampoo and then use a little for this recipe. Anyway, the ingredients are:

  • 3/4 cup organic conditioner
  • 1/4 cup organic shampoo
  • 4 tablespoon sweet almond oil or fractionated coconut oil
  • 10 drops essential oils of choice

Recipe Instructions:

  1. Combine all of the above and put it in a foam pump or a jar.
  2. Shake vigorously before use.

DIY Shaving Cream with Aloe Vera for Soothing Irritated Skin

A man shaving in pain

If this looks like you, try a shaving cream with Aloe Vera.

You’ve probably heard hundreds of times of how great Aloe Vera is for skin – not only for shaving products. Actually, today it seems like every skincare product tries to have it on their list of ingredients – and there’s a good reason for that. Aloe Vera is one of the most beneficial plants out there and you pretty much can’t go wrong with it. So, when making a natural shaving cream, adding it can only be a good thing. You’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup Aloe Vera gel (pick one you know is good for your skin)
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap (or melt 1oz in 1 cup water)
  • 2 tablespoon sweet almond oil
  • 1/2 cup filtered water
  • 10 drops essential oils of choice

Recipe Instructions:

  1. Combine all of the above and put it in a foam pump or a jar.
  2. Remember to shake vigorously before each use.

Final Thoughts

Let us just underline once more how great it is to use stuff that you made yourself. First off, knowing that no pharmaceutical company is tricking you into thinking something’s there when in fact it isn’t – that’s a great feeling. Secondly, it’s really fun even if you’re not usually into DIY stuff. You can even make a game out of it with your better half, or make the one that you guys can both use.

And, last but not least, it’s really cheap. All ingredients are found on Amazon or at your local health food store. So, get down to it. Pick one that seems easiest, or cheapest, or the most interesting, or even the most beneficial and go for it. You’ll thank us later.
