VESSEL HAMMOCK BATHTUB | BY SPLINTER WORKS

Splinter Works has long since been a leader in innovative sculptural furniture and home equipment, and the recent limited edition innovation from the renowned UK Company comes as no surprise. The Vessel hammock bathtub is all about combining creativity, aesthetics and practicality to come up with a piece of bathroom equipment that is not only great to look at, but soothing in every way. The inspiration for the limited edition vessel bathtub supposedly came from combining two of the most relaxing things in the world, the bathtub and a hammock.

The Vessel bathtub has been well received primarily as a piece of bathroom equipment, and as a uniquely created piece of art. With only 12 pieces created, this bathtub screams luxury and exclusivity, and only very few households will get to experience this truly unique creation. The futuristic yet functional design is definitely something to write home about.

Splinter Works has done a great job of incorporating art into the bathroom environment, where the tub itself is part of the visual and sensory experience of taking a bath. Vessel has been designed to be especially used in a wet room, and does not come with any ropes or poles to hold the tub in place. Instead, the Vessel is attached on both ends of the wall, where it is suspended as the tub does not touch the ground. Stainless steel brackets are used to hold the bathtub in place, and there is the option of leaving them revealed or getting them covered up.

To fill the tub, a floor standing tap is used, which also plays a part in the aesthetics of the Vessel hammock bathtub. There is a provision at the bottom of the tub to release bath water, which goes straight to the drain below. Vessel is all made out of carbon fiber. Besides the obvious aesthetic advantages of using carbon fiber, there are additional benefits of this material that Splinter Works must have considered when coming up with the concept. An added advantage here is that carbon fiber is much easier to work with than most materials especially for creative ‘artsy’ projects. The material inherently allows the designer to come up with virtually all kinds of curves and designs with little effort.

A foam core is also incorporated into the carbon fiber design of the Vessel bathtub, which also has its own advantages. One of these is that the bathtub is able to keep the water warm for considerably longer periods of time as compared to the traditional bathtubs that we see in the home.
There is a range of colors to choose from as far as the Vessel hammock bathtub goes. Besides the carbon-fiber black, other colors to choose from include pink, blue, red, yellow, pure silver and bronze. There really is something for everyone here, and Splinter Works really pushed the envelope on this new design. It is both unique and beautiful, and not to mention extremely functional and a complete deviation from the bathtub ‘norms’.

The inspiration for the Vessel bathtub was explained by the company’s co-founder Miles Hartwell in a press release; “Struck by the synergy between the shapes of two compelling symbols of relaxation, a hammock and a bathtub, we were inspired to develop a piece that would provide the ultimate vehicle for total escapism”.

The only way to describe the bathtub is that it defies gravity. Rather than a regular hammock where you can see the ropes suspending the hammock, the stainless steel brackets can be hidden to give the illusion of the Vessel bathtub hanging without any support. The play on the visuals is a definite plus where this tub is concerned, and is an enviable piece to have in the home.

Apart from the aesthetics of Splinter Works new creation, the functionality of the Vessel bathtub is another feature worthy of note. The drain itself carries on the artistic features of the bathtub, and with a drain resembling a tile; the bathwater gives the illusion of disappearing into the floor. Minimal clean up of the wet room is required, and maintenance is equally easy. The great thing about the entire design is the conspicuous lack of ropes and pulleys, and instead the Vessel hammock bathtub incorporates stainless steel brackets (which can be camouflaged) to hold the contraption in place. This is a very clever yet practical design, and it is great to see that one doesn’t have to compromise functionality and convenience for aesthetics. Another factor worthy of note is that the design of the bathtub only makes it practical for wet bathrooms which shouldn’t be a problem for most households.

The Splinter Works Vessel hammock bathtub is the epitome of luxury, and this is a limited edition of only 12. The price tag can be a little restrictive for most, but for those looking for exclusivity and luxury, it is a small price to pay to own this kind of bathroom equipment.
The whole thing looks like something out of a James Bond movie, and there is little doubt that the Vessel bathtub could be the launching pad to the future of bathroom designs. The limited edition bathtub is available in different colors, which makes it perfect for any kind of bathroom décor for those looking for something truly special. All in all, thumbs up to Splinter Works for their great and innovative design.
