SUUNTO AMBIT 2

$189+

GPS enabled watches are becoming ever-present. We have already presented several amazing ones, including the Ambit2’s year older predecessor, named simply the Suunto Ambit, which was actually good enough to compete with products of veteran GPS companies such as Garmin – the D2 Pilot Watch and the Tactix. Well, the Suunto Ambit2 is actually better than its older brother.

It is important for these products to have a clear target market since they need to be packed with features. For example, the mentioned Garmin D2 Pilot Watch can be used by everyone, but pilots will absolutely love it. The previous Suunto Ambit targeted athletes, primarily the ones who are into running or hiking. The Ambit2 also targets athletes, but a lot more versatile ones this time. Apart from having the functions that the Ambit had, the Ambit2 boasts indoor and outdoor swimming functionality and the very useful multisport mode.

When you press the start button on the watch you need to choose the type of the exercise – for example, you can opt for Indoor or Outdoor swimming, Trekking, Running and even Triathlon. You do this because different exercises trigger automatic pairing with different devices that support measuring particular aspects. After this is done, the watch connects to GPS satellites. Anyone who has used GPS devices knows that this might take some time, but here it is a matter of seconds.

Let’s say you want to go running. Once you have selected this and the watch has found the satellites simply press start again and you will see the information relevant for this particular exercise – pace, distance, heart rate (if you are wearing a strap that is paired with the watch), or anything else you opted for to be displayed on your screen. You can customize virtually every screen on your Ambit2. The figures can be displayed in metric or imperial system. All this goes for any activity you choose, with changes in relevant information that is displayed. These changes are really significant and you will love the versatility of the Ambit2.

Another great feature is the ANT + foot POD support that also exists on the previous Ambit. It enables you to gather speed and distance information when GPS is not available, or when you are inside on a treadmill.

One of the differences between the Ambit2 and the Ambit is that the Suunto Ambit 2 supports cycling power meters which enable you to compare actual outputs of a cyclist regardless of environment conditions or even weight of a cyclist, since the measures should be presented in watts per kilogram. This is actually how professionals compare outputs.

The multisport Triathlon mode seamlessly switches from one sport to the next and does not stop the current activity in order to get configured for the next one. These changes include loads of settings and pairings that provide relevant information instantly as well as gather that same information for future use.

The Ambit2 also includes all the features familiar from the first version which means that it is basically a significantly improved Suunto Ambit. What more can you need? It can also serve as a great everyday watch, but with the price of $535 on Amazon you should opt for it if you intend to use the sport features.
