The SoundShooter is a wireless portable speaker by Philips that is packed with useful functionality and shaped into a grenade resembling design and size.

First of all, the sound. A speaker of this size does not seem very powerful, but this little guy will surprise you. Ok, higher volumes and massive bass have been known to distort the sound a bit, but, having in mind its size and purpose, this is more than acceptable. The sound output is 2W and it features a mono sound system.

Then the looks. The rubber cover is not only for the grenade-like design, but it also serves as a protection should you drop the speaker. With the weight of just about 4 ounces and a carabiner it is very convenient to clip the speaker to your backpack or belt. It also features a built-in rechargeable battery (you also get a USB charging cable) that gives you about 8 hours of music and a 3.5 mm Aux port together with a retractable cable that enables you to connect easily without hindering the looks.

Another way to connect, and probably the preferred one, is via Bluetooth. You can stream music from up to 30 feet away. This way it can be connected to your iPhone, iPod, MP3 player, various smartphones and a PC. The bottom of the speaker holds a switch that turns it on and starts pairing. The same switch is used to change the mode to Aux.

Another very useful perk is its speakerphone ability that enables you to use the SoundShooter for hands free phone calls.

Philips Soundshooter attached to a belt

The price of this model is $43, but if you can do without the Bluetooth and speakerphone features, there is a cheaper option that costs only $20. It also comes in loads of different colors.

So, how good is the SoundShooter? Sound-wise it is surprisingly good, having in mind its size. Still, sound purists will not enjoy this one much. The distortion at high volumes will definitely hurt their ears. Still, this is a small, practical portable speaker that has great features and a great battery. It is not supposed to be used as a party speaker, so its capabilities are more than sufficient having in mind its purpose. And it’s so damn beautiful.
