Wouldn’t it be great to have a stand for your iPad because its case doesn’t do the trick? What if this stand also doubled as a loudspeaker? They say that many great ideas are born out of frustration, and this couldn’t be more true in the case of a promising young product designer Sanjeet Das who came up with the idea of designing ‘OPUS’, a stand and sound amplifier in one.
Sanjeet, who is currently majoring Manufacturing and Design at Northwestern University and interns at Innovation Factory, explains: “I was frustrated with my iPad case, it didn’t function properly as a stand. I wanted to create something I wouldn’t have to attach to my iPad at all times & wanted to preserve the smooth look & feel of the iPad. After research into similar products, I found an interesting concept for amplifying sound from the iPads internal speaker. This is where I found white space & started to develop the concept for Opus. There wasn’t a product out there that combined both a stand and a sound amplifier.”
Opus has two ergonomic segments – the right one firmly holds your device, while the left one is an acoustic loudspeaker which catches, redirects, and augments sound. These compact interlocking segments stay together using magnets, and they will be available in variety of colours – Black, Graphite, Navy & White, Cherry, and Mint. Not only that, Sanjeet plans to have Opus in customizable 3D versions in Black, Gold, Neon Green, Dark Blue and Red & White.
Opus is best suited for 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation iPad, as well as the iPhone 5, iPhone 4/4S, and iPod Touch (3rd, 4th, & 5th generation). Additionally, Opus is compatible with the Galaxy S3 and S4.
In order for this wonderfully innovative product to reach a manufacturing stage, Sanjeet and his team (James Wilde, design engineer specializing in 3D modeling and rapid prototyping, and Jess Barker, architect and marketing & social media manager at Innovation Factory), have turned to Kickstarter. Their goal is to collect $10,000. watch video below
