NIKON 1 J5 MIRRORLESS CAMERA

from $496.95

Although Nikon mirrorless cameras were essentially nothing to write home about, the new Nikon 1 J5 camera aims to change this status. Combining retro style with high end technology, the Nikon 1 5J is nothing like its predecessors which were mainly outperformed by mirrorless cameras from other companies. Equipped with a stronger image sensor, faster image processing engine, a tiltable display and a few other improvements, this camera just might find a way to potential buyers even though it is slightly overpriced.

Redesign

The Nikon 1 J5 looks nothing like its predecessors

Let’s see what makes this camera so appealing. First, the design of the Nikon 1 5J has went in a different direction when you take into consideration previous models. Sporting a more retro design, this camera was outfitted with a faux leather finish and an enhanced grip. It also comes in three color variants (black, silver and black and silver) so you can choose which style suites you the best. But enough about that. The main reason behind our interest in this camera is what makes it run. Nikon 1 J5 is equipped with a 20.8-megapixel 1-inch image sensor and a faster Expeed 5A image-processing engine which will allow for 20 fps still shooting with continuous focus and 60 fps single focus shooting. This camera is capable of 4K video shooting which is great feature. However, there is a downside to this. It can only do so in 15 fps. This is not something many potential buyers will appreciate.

PASM dial

This camera utilizes the PASM dial

On the upside, Nikon has decided to abandon the clunky and confusing menu which made it a little difficult to access some basic feature and replace it with a PASM (Program Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority, Manual) dial which makes life more easy. You can use it to change exposure modes and you have a secondary dial for additional adjustments.

Nikon 1 J5 Camera display

Nikon has decided to tweak the display a little bit too. The display of Nikon 1 J5 is a 3 inch LCD which tilts up to 180 degrees which is perfect for selfie addicts. This model’s selling feature is that it can change its lenses with any of the Nikkor 1 series of lenses. This is a great feature because you can find a compatible lens for any situation. As for the price of this model, well, it’s a tad overpriced. Nikon 1 J5 with 10-30mm lenses starts at $496.95 followed by $746.95 for the 10-30mm + 30-100mm and ends with $1,046.95 for the 10-100mm lens model.

Should you treat yourself to one of these? Well, that’s for you to decide. You could perhaps find something better if that flaw of shooting 4K in 15 fps really bothers you but all in all, this is an excellent piece of equipment and you can put it to good use.
