Problem-solving doesn’t come easy for a lot of people. It’s important because you’re going to have to do so in your professional and personal life on a regular basis. Always turning to others for answers isn’t a good long-term resolution.
The good news is that there are ways for you to sharpen your problem-solving skills and improve your analytical abilities. Review the ideas and then give it a shot and notice what a difference being able to do so makes in your own life. It’ll take time to develop your new proficiencies so take your time and remain patient with yourself.
Don’t Jump to Conclusions
You need to identify the true problem before you go jumping to conclusions and making assumptions. Clearly define the issue at hand and pinpoint what it is you’re exactly trying to solve before you begin brainstorming any ideas. Simplify the problem you’re trying to work through best you can as to not make it more complicated then it truly is. While it’ll be enticing to want to turn to someone else for the answer, give yourself a chance to solve it on your own first and then reach out for help if you need it.
Exercise your Mind with Creative Activities
What you do in your free time will impact your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For example, participate in creative and relaxing activities such as art, yoga or an Escape Game. These are all great ways to clear your head and get you thinking on the right path. Escape Games, in particular, will allow you to practice solving complicated puzzles and mysteries, which are skills that you can carry over for dealing with obstacles in your daily life.
Keep an Ideas Journal
Record any ideas, experiences and important thoughts that enter your mind. Remind yourself of times you were able to solve a problem proficiently, and what you did to get there. An ideas journal will give you a tangible tool to help you when you’re feeling stuck and have a lot of thoughts floating around in your mind. Draw or write down how you’re feeling and what’s going through your brain when approached with a problem and then details for how you were able to work through it and come to a conclusion.
It’ll be tempting for your mind to want to go to what’s easy and obvious right away, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s your answer. Step back, keep an open mind and analyze what’s in front of you and then start finding unique and different ways to approach the issue at hand. List out as many possible solutions you can think of to start. Being close-minded will only keep you from seeing all the possibilities and answers there could be to your problem.
Use these tips to help you sharpen your problem-solving skills and make your life easier overall. While it’ll be a bit challenging, it’ll feel good to be able to formulate responses to questions on your own and not have to always depend on others. The best part is these new skills will help you in all areas of your life.
