GEAR4 is the company behind the Renew SleepClock, the device that seems to be just another iPhone docking station or a speaker with the option of listening to FM radio, but it is so much more.

The Renew SleepClock is an alarm clock, but its additional features are more important than what many people think are its main functions. It features a sleep monitor that is not based on any form of contact with the sleeper. There is no wristband, headband or any other accessory.

Now, the price seemed to be a bit of a problem. At $200 the Renew SleepClock topped the price range of alarm clock speakers, most of which are filled with various features. The sleep monitor was, GEAR4 say, the sole reason for the high price. However, the price has dropped significantly and it can now be purchased on Amazon for just $45. So, let’s see how it works.

The sleep monitor in the Renew SleepClock notes your movements and activities during sleep, measures them and gives you detailed and comprehensive information about all the aspects you might find important and even surprising. It is accompanied by the application for your phone that shows you the strength of the signal and informs you of your visibility in respect to the device’s sensor.

The application also provides the information we talked about by tracking sleep averages over various periods of time (day, week, month and year) and provides detailed information on numerous aspects of sleep such as number of hours you spent sleeping, number of times you wake up, the time it takes you to fall asleep and, maybe most importantly, the number of hours you spent in deep sleep.

There are additional perks and visual solutions that make the entire experience of using the device and the app fun, rather than utterly useful. These include the minimalist design and cool sliders for setting the alarms. For us, the most useful feature would have to be the gentle wake up option. It gives you the option to choose the time range during which you would like to be woken up. The Renew SleepClock decides when you are not in deep sleep and wakes you up at this time within the set period. If you are in deep sleep during the entire period, the device wakes you up at the end of the period letting you sleep the most. This is very useful because a sudden wake up during deep sleep makes you feel very tired.

Another cool feature is the option of falling asleep listening to music, which is pretty common for many devices, but this one fades the music once it realizes you are asleep. In addition, it can be used as a charging station.
